  • The Enrollment Seminar is your induction to the world of higher education. AIEP welcomes and salutes you in taking this serious step in shaping your future. From here on you are mounting the ladder of higher education. This will have positive consequences throughout your life and career. We pledges our full support to insure that your move will be successful and of lasting benefit to you.

As soon as AIEP has received this completed form and payment of the Entry Seminar Fee, you will receive confirmation of your enrollment at the Community Colleges Entry Seminar. You will then receive the Entry Seminar Attendance Guide, which will include detailed instructions regarding what documents are required at the Entry Seminar.

Two Guaranteed Enrollments - 2+2: After the students have attended the Entry Seminar they will receive up to three choices of colleges to attend across the United States. The criteria used to determine which three of the colleges the students are offered include:

    • English Ability
    • Intended Educational Major/Study
    • Student Choice/Desire
    • Career Goals
    • Capacity of college’s programs
    • Housing availability

The three choices are provided to the students based on AIEP assessment of the application after the Entry Seminar.

Upon admission to the college and after the student has earned an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree, the student is guaranteed admission to an American four-year college or university. American universities and four-year colleges are required to accept transfer students from community colleges in their states, or region. Students may also apply for transfers to any four-year college or university anywhere in the USA. We provide assistance to transfer students (year three) from the community college to the four-year College or university.

During the Entry Seminar provides all of the necessary information to the parents and students regarding the community college system. This includes locations, areas of study, costs, etc. It lays out the road map of the four-year degree program for the students and their families. During the seminar, all the mechanical questions are answered. In addition, information is provided regarding housing arrangements, and most importantly, the processing of the visa. These points are very important to natural parents and students in order to guarantee success. Second and most important to our client colleges, student proficiency in the English language is evaluated. Students must provide, as part of their application, current TOEFL test results. But, one of the main purposes of the Entry Seminar is to interview each student in order to fulfill our commitment to our client colleges in the USA that the students meet English language proficiency standards. It is equally to assure that the students are sufficiently prepared to get full benefit of studying in America.

English Language Abilities: ll students are required to have current TOEFL scores (within the last two years) from at least one of the three versions of the TOEFL exam: Internet-based Test, Computer-based Test, and the Paper-based Test. It is preferred students supply current test results from all three versions of the TOEFL. While we does not have a set, minimum base score required for admission, the scores are used in order to evaluate the student’s overall ability in English, along with personal oral interview. Additional test results from the SLEP, or Michigan test can be submitted and will be taken into account to assess the overall English ability of the students. It is important the student is able to function at a high enough level in an English speaking environment, which will allow him or her to attend the regular course offerings at the college. Typically, we advise a student to have attained a minimum 500 score on the Paper-based TOEFL exam. A primary purpose of the Entry Seminar is to interview each student in English by a us in order to completely understand the student’s actual English ability. We evaluates each student’s application as a whole and does not rely on any single factor to determine admission. The students attending the Entry Seminar should understand that they must have adequate English skills to attend regular college-level classes in the United States.

How to Apply: Please contact AIEP by email or by phone or visit our office for obtaining Enrollment Form.

  • What is the LSI Paid Placement Program?
The Paid Work Experience Program, at the end of a course with LSI, offers practical work experience within selected fields. The program is designed for people who want to gain experience in the specific area, improve their English and earn some money whilst they are learning and working. It is recommended that you obtain both your Student Visa and your Work Permit (with our support documents) before you leave your home country because of the difficulty in doing so after you have arrived in Canada.

Can I do any position? Am I suitable for the program?
Entry level positions can be found especially in the hospitality industry (for example, banquet serving), or in the food and catering industry (for example, as a chef). You will receive industry-specific training prior to starting in your job. Professional placements can be made in fields such as IT or Accounting, and long-term placements can be made in other professions.

Do I need to take a course at LSI?
Yes, you need to take an 8-12 week English course for short-term placements or a 24, 36, or 48 week ISY course for long-term placements; this will be followed by the full time work placement of the same duration as the course.

    How much will it cost?
The paid work placement fee for entry level and short and long-term positions for professional positions (6 months or longer) required at the time of registration. The overall price of work placement will consist of the placement fee plus the cost of your tuition, accommodation and living expenses.

What level of English do I need?
For entry level positions, a Middle-Intermediate level of English is preferred, but a Lower-Intermediate level can be acceptable. For other positions, students need to be at least Upper Intermediate in level. It is important to note that you will be in competition with other applicants and you will need to pass an interview with the employer in order to succeed in the placement. If LSI feels that your level of English is not sufficient to pass an interview, you may be asked to take additional English classes.

    How long are the placements?
The minimum period for a hospitality position is 2 months and the recommended period is 3 months. The minimum period for a professional, full time placement is 6 months, and durations of 36 weeks or 48 weeks are possible through LSI. (In general, positions are available for various amounts of time depending on the length of your course at LSI. In all placements, the length of time spent in the workplace cannot be more than the length of the course studied at LSI.)

Will I have to do an interview?
Yes; your interview might be in person or via telephone. LSI will give you all the details of this beforehand on an “Interview Confirmation Sheet”. Please make sure that you look at the website and location of the placement before the interview; if you do not understand anything please ask us to explain it. There is also a list of tips on the interview confirmation sheet and you should always follow these. (If you do not follow our guidelines you may not receive a placement.)

    Where will I live?
Accommodation is optional and not a requirement for LSI or the work experience program. Students are free to secure their own housing or ask LSI for assistance. (If students are placed outside the city in seasonal resorts, low cost housing is often made available by the employer.)

    Where will my placement be?
Your placement could be anywhere in Canada. Many of the placements are in British Columbia or Ontario (and often in the Vancouver or Toronto areas), but you must accept the fact that you can be placed anywhere in the Canada. Alberta, for example, is one province where many paid placements are being made. Due to the nature of the industry you cannot request a specific location.

How much will I get paid?
The amount or kind of remuneration offered varies from company to company and from position to position. Some companies may pay a flat fee, while some prefer to pay an hourly wage; in some cases employers may offer free room and board instead of a cash payment.

Do I need to pay tax?
Yes you will have to pay tax from your salary but in some cases you can claim it back. (Some agencies and accounting firms will offer a cash-back service on tax claims.) Please ensure that you ask your employer or local tax office for the documents that govern your employment in Canada.

    Do I need a visa?
Yes, you need a Student Authorization for your course at LSI, and you will need to obtain a Canadian work permit.

    Do I need health insurance?
Health insurance is recommended for all students who study at LSI. Depending on your length of stay as a student in Canada, you can qualify for provincial health insurance during your stay.

    Is there an age requirement?
Yes, you must be at least 19 years old for an entry-level position, and should be 21 for a professional position. (It is expected that candidates for a long-term, professional placement will already have three years of professional experience in their home country.)

Is there a particular start date?
No there isn't, but demand from different businesses will vary depending on the season when you apply; a flexible start period and end period must always be given to meet the changing demands from the particular business industry. For example, if a business is seasonal, applications will have to be received at the beginning of the season.

    Can two people apply together?
You can apply as a couple and we will do our best to place you together but cannot promise to do so.
This is because the employers might not need 2 people at the same time and because live-in accommodation is not always available (if you are placed in the hospitality industry). It can help though if you both have experience and have a high level of English.

What happens if I don’t like my placement?
If you do not like your placement, and if the position differs from what is explained on your “Work Training Contract”, please inform LSI or make note of it in the regular reports that you submit to our placement office. We can then look into the situation and, when necessary, work to find you another position. However this is subject to us receiving a satisfactory report from your employment supervisor.

What happens if my employer terminates my employment before the end of my contract date?
If your employment is terminated because the placement no longer has work for you and it is no fault of your own, we will work to find you an alternative placement. However, if your employment is terminated because you haven’t performed well or you have committed a gross misconduct, we will not seek a further placement for you and you will have to return home or find your own employment.

What are some examples of employment being terminated due to ‘my own fault’?
There are many examples of where employment can be terminated (or “Fired” as it is commonly known). Here are some examples of reasons why some of our previous students have been fired.
    • Lateness for start of work
    • Finishing your shift early without permission
    • Being unfriendly or argumentative with colleagues or management.
    • Not being flexible
    • Giving away drinks or other products/goods to friends this is considered to be theft.
    • Telling employer or colleagues that they are leaving before their notice period (read further)
    • Being rude to customers.
    • Work quality not to the standards that is expected.
    • Damaging company property.
    • False facts on their CV.
There are obviously other reasons why someone can be fired but no employer enjoys letting someone go
and employers normally have a good reason for doing this.

What happens if my employer changes my job position?
If your employer changes your job because he feels that you are not suitable for the original job or that there is no longer a position for you in that department due to a down-turn in business you must accept this offer of employment. You will be able to keep your placement officer informed about this.

If I want to leave the placement and return home or to the LSI school what must I do?
You should always serve your notice to the employer as agreed on your “Work Training Contract” You should always put it in writing thanking the employer for your job and giving your date of leaving. You should never ever give your employer your finish date before this or tell any other members of staff as your employer may ask you to leave earlier and in this case LSI will not be able to find you another job. You should also inform LSI that you are leaving and if you are going back to school you must inform the school and not arrive there without giving them at least one weeks notice.

Do I get a report or certificate?
We receive a report from the employer and if you would like a copy for your future job applications it can be sent to you. In addition to this, LSI will provide you with a letter/certificate for your work placement.

    How do I apply?
    • Complete an LSI enrolment form giving details of the required course, accommodation and transfer requirements.
    • Complete an LSI ‘Paid Work Placement’ application form. Please note that the start date for your paid work placement must be at least 12 weeks after we receive your application.
    • Send the forms as well as a Resume/CV, and other documents as requested by the school officer.

    What happens next?
    • All work experience application packets will be sent to you once an LSI Enrolment Form has been submitted. Applications must be fully completed along with all supporting documents as well as payment and sent to LSI. All documents must be ORIGINALS (faxed or emailed copies are not acceptable in some cases). These must in turn be received by LSI or our partner-agency 12-16 weeks in advance of the program start date (see specific program requirements). PLEASE MAKE SURE TO PLAN IN ADVANCE AND ALLOW ENOUGH TIME FOR THIS! Note that placements will only be made AFTER the required level of English is achieved!
    • You will be contacted by the work placement office at LSI to discuss your CV Questionnaire. We will then use this information to create a standardised CV.
    • If your level of English is not good enough to attend an interview by the end of your studies we will not be able to find a work placement for you. You will be given the option of extending your studies until this level has been reached.
    • During the last few weeks of your course you will be informed of the times/locations of your interviews. It is important that you take these interviews seriously – the companies are under no obligation to give you a job. The most common reason for failing these interviews is through inadequate English language skills.
    • Please note that LSI often works with agencies to help us find the best possible placement for you. So do not be surprised if an agency contacts you on our behalf with details of companies, or to arrange interviews.
    • Support will be provided throughout and you will be contacted by LSI or an agency early into your
placement to make sure that everything is running smoothly.
    • Wages will normally be paid directly into your bank account. Salaries can either be paid weekly, fortnightly or monthly, and are normally paid in arrears. We can advise you on how to open a Canadian bank account for your wages to be paid into. Note -- it can be difficult to open an account if you are here for less than 6 months. If you can open a Canadian bank account with a from your home country through your existing bank then this can be a good idea.
    • Uniforms and meals are sometimes provided free of charge by your employer.

    Terms and conditions
    • Whilst LSI is responsible for finding paid work placement, we cannot be responsible for placements that fail due to improper behaviour of the student, incompetence, or inadequate English.
    • If we do not believe that your original objectives are realistic, we will discuss this with you and try to agree new areas in which we believe you would be more likely to succeed.
    • The type of job offered to you will normally be dependent on your English ability. The majority of
    jobs offered will be unskilled.
    • When a company offers you a job in one of your chosen areas you must accept it.
    • Once you have been placed, you will become an employee of your host company, and as such
be subject to their rules, regulations and working practices. LSI will not provide an alternative
placement if you leave the company voluntarily or if you are sacked.
    • When you have accepted a placement, LSI will only consider moving you to another paid placement if your agreed working hours drop below 20 hours per week or in the event of gross misconduct on behalf of the host company.

Not only will you learn the language, you will also benefit from an invaluable insight into family life. During your stay you will make good friends with your host family and learn to speak in the most natural environment — the home. The host families are very carefully selected by the LSI Language Centre you choose and will help you to feel at home. You will receive full-board in a single room as the only guest unless you choose to share.

In addition, you may participate in any of the activities and cultural programmes offered by the LSI Language Centre. You will receive one to one tuition, allowing you to concentrate on your individual needs. Your schedule can be arranged quite flexibly between you and your teacher and lessons may take various forms such as a conversation hour during a walk in the park or a practical shopping expedition. You can determine together with your teacher which themes and topics you wish to cover in your course. Living and studying in a teacher's home offers an excellent way of mastering the target language quickly.
